Gun & Dungeons is a new, interesting run-or-shoot mobile game. Despite being one of the hundreds of Archero-inspired titles with a generic theme, this one offers some unusual features making it worth checking.
The most prominent visual feature is the blocky/voxel design. Almost everything is made of little, colored, equally-sized cubes - characters, enemies, maps, and gears. The rest - like coins dropped by monsters - is created using low-poly, single-colored objects, nicely blending in the overall design. While this approach may sometimes mean low quality, it's not the case here. Environments are detailed and lively, enemies are smoothly animated, and even simple bullets paint vivid, dynamic scenes, not to mention large fights. What's more, unlike standard, separated rooms, everything appears smoothly in a single 3d scene - like a floor being raised from depths as soon as you're getting close.
The core gameplay isn't surprising - enemies appear, and you either shoot or run & avoid being hit. After some time, you'll get random skills - this time dropped like equipment - until you defeat the stage's final boss. The key difference here is the approach to managing those skills. Instead of just picking something from a random pot, you'll be given limited skill slots - and the choice to work on upgrades or replace useless perks.
Another nice feature is the map interactivity - not just path choices or levers to open some gates. It's also how enemies appear - sometimes spawned from some grave, then riding toward you on a cart, crushing some wall as a result. Bosses are also unlikely - they often come in pairs, with separate health bars.
After a battle, you'll get tonnes of loot, just as always. It can be used the usual way - equip your character, buy upgrades, merge old gear, etc. Aside from weapons, there are 6 types of equipment, including cute blocky pets - and they all have unlockable abilities, depending on rarity.
There's also the usual permanent upgrade system - this time split into 3 paths with purchasable perks, like knockback, HP boost, or increased coin drops. The game modes won't surprise you either - you can play either normal or elite journey stages -or similar, time-limited survival mode.
Run-or-shoot titles usually use every chance to show you ads, and Gun & Dungeons is no different. You'll get the best skills much quicker after some videos, and you can get some extra loot this way. Then, you can pay some real cash for premium currency or chests/bundles.
